Taylor Swift's new song may receive an Oscar next year: will it finally win a nomination?
Elton John won his second Oscar last Sunday in the category of the best original song for the song "(I will love myself again)", which he and his longtime collaborator Bernie Taupin wrote for the film Biography of the Musician Rocketman. The song was his favorite when he recorded the Golden Globe, although the list of nominees for the two ceremonies was different.
Now one of the artists John defeated for the globe already has a new Oscar-worthy trophy for the next round, but will he be nominated in the end?
Taylor Swift's new song "Only The Young" hits the charts this week, but it may have a much bigger purpose than just another hit for the singer. The song appears in Netflix's new documentary Miss Americana, which turned into a pop star and quickly became an integral part of fans of one of the world's most famous artists.
Miss Americana is not only available on the broadcasting platform, but has also been performed in a handful of theaters for a very short time, which should qualify her for the Oscar. It is probably presented for the best documentary, by winking, that the typically serious category is a distant possibility. Instead, Swift finally has the opportunity to win his first Oscar nomination for "Only The Young," which could ultimately be a vertical contender for the best original song.
The tune, which would have been created specifically for the documentary (a commitment according to the Academy of Arts and Sciences of Cinema), arrives shortly before the credits arrive. Taking into account the conditions of participation, a composition "must be used in the main part of the film or as the first musical signal in the credits" in order to be considered for the best original song. It should also contain music and lyrics, and "Only The Young" clearly has both.
While it is not uncommon for a song created for a documentary to be nominated for the best original song, it is not unknown. "I Need to Wake Up" by Melissa Etheridge of An Inconvenient Truth won in 2006, and the trophies recorded for major films like Chasing Ice, Glen Campbell: Ich bin ich, The Hunting Ground and Racing Extinction won the trophy well.
